Introduction to the Prototyping Project

Physical Prototyping is the process of making a physical representation of an idea. Early in the process physical prototypes can be made of all kinds of materials. Physical prototypes allow the designer and users to interact with the idea. By building an idea designers are challenged to “build to think” and thus gain deeper insights. – Stanford Institute of Design
PROJECT 3: PHYSICAL PROTOTYPE
create a non-functioning physical prototype for your instrument and ‘perform’ it in class. Use cheap, easy to with with materials like cardboard, styrofoam, and paper.

Introduction to the Ensemble Project

Together we’ll design a small general instrument that we can all write for. The goal is to explore group performance using multiples of a single idea. By keeping the interfaces consistent, we’ll be able to load one patch on all of the instruments. We’ll design and build the instruments together (using class funds for materials). Each of you will be responsible for a PD patch and a group score. The organelle by Critter and Guitari (above) is an example of a general interface that can accept different kinds of patches.
Instruments finished by 3.20 and scores/patches by 3.21 (upload by midnight). We’ll rehearse the piece on the 22nd and the following week.
